Words by Gone Outdoor.
The annual Gone4Good virtual trail running challenge wrapped up on July 31 with more than R108,000 raised for grassroots organisations fighting to protect our wild spaces before they are gone for good.
These organisations included Protect The West Coast, the African Pangolin Working Group, Sentinel Ocean Alliance and Dream Higher, an organisation that takes rock climbing to the vulnerable youth of Cape Town.
The Gone4Good Classic (19km) as well as Gone4Good Lite (10km) started and finished at the Gone. Outdoor store in Constantia, Cape Town, and the Gone4Good Joburg run (18km) started and finished at Gone. Outdoor in Morningside.
A big thanks to Gone. Outdoor and all partners who helped make this happen:
- Big cheers to Jack Black Beer for their support and the best finish line treats
- Prize sponsors Patagonia, Inov-8, Altra, Maurten, Balega, Ultimate Direction and Maurten
- Botanicum Cafe & Grill for delish post-run bagels and coffee
- And all of Gone’s neighbours at High Constantia
The aim of the campaign was to get the public to participate in the fund raising, and with your help, we managed to raise a total of R108,685!
The incredible trail community came together and helped to raise R68,685 through Givengain and in-store donations. Additionally, Gone. donated an extra R40,000 as part of their 1% for the Planet monthly commitment.
The campaign reached 14,624 people. 1,946 people signed up for the challenge, and 7,493 collective kilometres were logged on the running app Strava.
PTWC would like to thank the team at Gone. for their support!
The Cape Town Classic was won by Iain Peterkin (1:29:42) and Leani Grimes (1:52:09) and the Joburg victors were Rory Scheffer (1:10:48) and Megan Dempster (1:25:28). Each winner scored a Patagonia trail running kit to the value of R10,000.
Special mention to Sindrino Matthews (45:07) and Cait Snethlage (49:11) for their times on the Lite route.
We look forward to what 2024 Gone For Good has in store!
